Princess Cruises is making a surprisingly significant change to its Caribbean itineraries, moving most upcoming visits away from Princess Cays, the cruise line’s private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera. For travelers, this is more than a simple port substitution. Princess Cays has been part of the Princess Caribbean experience for more than three decades, and replacing it with destinations such as Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key can noticeably change the feel of a cruise.
The change is especially important for travelers who booked an itinerary specifically because it included a relaxed private beach day. While all three destinations offer a version of the private-island experience, they are not interchangeable.
What Princess Cruises Has Actually Confirmed
Princess Cays opened in 1992 and occupies more than 40 acres along the southern end of Eleuthera. It has traditionally been Princess Cruises’ primary private destination in the Bahamas.
That relationship appears to be changing.
Princess Cruises has confirmed that the majority of its previously published calls at Princess Cays are being shifted to Half Moon Cay. Other itineraries are showing Celebration Key as a replacement.
The change begins appearing on upcoming cruises this fall, although Princess Cays is not disappearing completely, at least based on currently published schedules. A small number of future cruises continue to show the destination.
That distinction is important. Princess has not announced that Princess Cays is permanently closing, nor has the cruise line publicly detailed its long-term plans for the property. What is confirmed is that Princess ships will visit it far less frequently than originally scheduled.
Half Moon Cay Is a Different Kind of Beach Day
For passengers whose Princess Cays visit changes to Half Moon Cay, the replacement may initially sound unusual. Half Moon Cay has traditionally been associated most closely with Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line, but all of these brands operate under Carnival Corporation.

This is why simply saying that one "private island" has replaced another doesn't tell travelers very much. The name on the itinerary may occupy the same single day of the cruise, but the experience ashore can be quite different.
Why Carnival Corporation May Be Shifting Princess Ships
Princess has not provided a detailed explanation for the broader strategy behind the changes, so anything beyond its confirmed itinerary adjustments remains speculation.
There is, however, a larger trend worth watching.
Carnival Corporation has been developing its collection of Caribbean destinations across its cruise brands, rather than treating every private destination as belonging exclusively to one line. Sending Princess passengers to Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key gives the company more flexibility in deciding where ships go and how its private destinations are used.
That could become increasingly important as Caribbean cruise capacity grows and more ships compete for limited space at popular ports.
For travelers, the practical lesson is simple: private destinations that were once strongly associated with individual cruise lines may increasingly become shared across sister brands.
