Norwegian Cruise Line has officially opened bookings for Norwegian Bella, its newest cruise ship scheduled to debut in May 2028. Rather than heading straight to the Caribbean, the ship will spend its inaugural season sailing seven-night Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona, Spain.
Announced October 20, 2026, Norwegian Bella will be the final ship in Norwegian's Prima Class, bringing together many of the features introduced on earlier vessels while adding expanded outdoor spaces, new family attractions and more places to relax.
At approximately 170,000 gross tons and 1,129 feet long, Norwegian Bella will join Norwegian Aura as one of the largest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet.
For travelers considering a European cruise in 2028, the announcement introduces an interesting option: a brand-new ship with resort-style attractions sailing one of the Mediterranean's most popular itineraries.
A New Ship Sailing Some of Europe's Most Popular Destinations
Norwegian Bella will begin sailing from Barcelona in May 2028, offering seven-night round-trip Mediterranean cruises.
The itineraries will feature destinations including Rome, Florence and Salerno in Italy, Marseille in France, and Palma de Mallorca in Spain.
These are familiar Mediterranean cruise destinations, but that's not necessarily a disadvantage.
For travelers visiting Europe for the first time, this type of itinerary offers an opportunity to experience several major destinations without repeatedly packing, changing hotels or arranging transportation between cities.
Round-trip departures from Barcelona also simplify travel planning compared with cruises that begin and end in different cities. Travelers can arrange flights through the same airport and potentially spend a few additional days exploring Barcelona before or after their cruise.
There is one important consideration, however.
Mediterranean cruises can be considerably more demanding than Caribbean vacations. Visiting Rome from Civitavecchia or Florence from Livorno requires substantial travel time between the port and the city itself.
That means some shore excursions can involve long days, early departures and plenty of walking.
Travelers attracted by Norwegian Bella's elaborate onboard attractions should consider how much time they'll actually have to enjoy them between port visits.
Ocean Heights Brings New Attractions to the Top Decks
One of Norwegian Bella's biggest attractions will be Ocean Heights, a multi-level outdoor entertainment complex spanning decks 18 through 21.
During the day, the area will function as an activity destination featuring waterslides, games and physical challenges. At night, lighting and digital projections will transform the space into a different atmosphere.
Among the attractions planned for Norwegian Bella are Eclipse Racers, where guests can race side by side, and Bella Free Fall, a waterslide designed for thrill seekers.
The Wave will accommodate up to four riders on a pendulum-style raft slide, while The Drop will send guests down a dry slide spanning 10 decks.
Additional attractions include a ropes course, a nine-hole miniature golf course and Moon Climber, a multi-level adventure course that doesn't require a harness.
For families with children or teenagers, these features could make Norwegian Bella particularly appealing.
However, travelers primarily interested in exploring European destinations should remember that the ship's attractions will be competing for their limited vacation time.
More Outdoor Space and a Larger Pool Deck
Norwegian Bella will also feature an expanded pool deck that Norwegian says will be more than 15% larger than those aboard Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.
That additional space is worth noting.
Large cruise ships can offer an impressive number of attractions, but finding a comfortable place to relax outdoors is often just as important as having another waterslide.
The expanded area will include additional seating, an infinity hot tub and a large entertainment screen.
Families will find a dedicated Kids' Aqua Park with interactive water features and splash areas. Two additional waterslides, The Party Slide and Infinity Loop, will provide options for guests of different ages.
Elsewhere, Ocean Boulevard will wrap around Deck 8, offering an outdoor promenade with restaurants, bars, pools and hot tubs.
Norwegian is also adding more seating to Ocean Boulevard compared with Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.
For travelers who enjoy walking along the waterfront or finding a quieter outdoor spot away from the main pool, this could be one of the ship's most useful features.
Norwegian Bella Isn't Just for Families
Although many of Norwegian Bella's headline attractions are family-oriented, the ship will also include spaces designed specifically for adults.
Vibe Beach Club will offer an adults-only retreat with infinity hot tubs, an oceanfront bar, loungers and daybeds.
Horizon Park, located on Deck 19, will provide outdoor lawn games and panoramic ocean views.
Travelers seeking more luxurious accommodations will find 159 suites within The Haven by Norwegian, the cruise line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept.
The Haven will feature private elevators, a dedicated restaurant and bar, an infinity pool, hot tubs, an outdoor sauna and a cold room.
Norwegian also plans separate family-friendly and adults-only areas within The Haven.
These distinctions matter when comparing cruise prices. Norwegian Bella will offer everything from inside cabins and studio accommodations to balcony staterooms and luxury suites, but not every onboard experience will necessarily be included in the base cruise fare.
Travelers should compare the total cost of the accommodations and amenities they actually intend to use.
How Does Norwegian Bella Compare With Norwegian Aura?
Norwegian Bella will closely resemble Norwegian Aura, another upcoming Prima Class ship scheduled to debut in 2027.
Both ships will feature many of the same attractions, including Ocean Heights, expanded outdoor areas and family-friendly entertainment.
The most significant difference announced so far is where they'll sail.
Norwegian Aura will focus on Caribbean cruises, while Norwegian Bella will begin its career in the Mediterranean.
That gives travelers an interesting choice between two similar new ships offering very different vacation experiences.
Those looking for warm-weather beach days and more opportunities to enjoy the ship may prefer a Caribbean itinerary.
Travelers interested in European cities, historical landmarks and Mediterranean culture may find Norwegian Bella's inaugural season more appealing.
The ship itself is only part of the decision.
Is Norwegian Bella Worth Considering for 2028?
Norwegian Bella looks particularly well suited to families and multigenerational groups who want to combine a European vacation with the attractions of a modern resort-style cruise ship.
Its seven-night Barcelona itineraries offer access to several popular Mediterranean destinations, while its expanded outdoor spaces and varied activities provide plenty to enjoy between excursions.
For travelers who prefer smaller ships, quieter surroundings or itineraries with more time in individual ports, Norwegian Bella may not be the ideal choice.
But for those who want to experience Europe aboard one of Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ships, its 2028 debut offers another option worth comparing.
